What this office does
District courts are the trial courts of general jurisdiction in Texas, and every county is served by at least one. They have original jurisdiction over felony criminal cases, divorce cases, cases involving title to land, election contests, civil matters where the money or damages involved total $200 or more, and any matter not placed in another trial court. Most district courts try both criminal and civil cases, but in densely populated counties like Harris the courts specialize in civil, criminal, juvenile or family matters.
