The neighbourhood court: small claims, traffic tickets, evictions and truancy.
What this office does
Justice of the Peace courts are Texas's local-level trial courts, with precincts set by the state constitution according to county population. In Harris County they handle small claims and other minor civil suits, bad-check cases, and eviction cases between landlords and tenants. On the criminal side they hear citations punishable by fine only, including traffic cases. These courts also hold tow hearings, rule on occupational license petitions, and perform marriage ceremonies.
