County Courts at Law and Probate Courts — 5 more races

4-year terms

demo data

Handle misdemeanours, smaller lawsuits, evictions on appeal, and wills and estates. Most of these courts are listed individually above.

What this office does

The Texas Constitution limits each county to a single county court, so the Legislature creates statutory county courts at law in more populous counties. The jurisdiction of each varies and is set by the statute creating that court; civil jurisdiction generally exceeds a justice court's and falls below a district court's, and these courts usually hear appeals from justice of the peace and municipal courts. County-level courts handle Class A and Class B misdemeanors. Statutory probate courts have original and exclusive jurisdiction over probate, guardianship and mental health commitments.

Five of these races (2 county civil, 2 county criminal, 1 probate) had a contested primary whose winner we could not confirm from the official canvass, so we don't list their candidates rather than risk naming the wrong person. See the official sample ballot for those names.
