State Board of Education, District 8

Sets what Texas public schools teach, approves textbooks, and oversees the Permanent School Fund. District 8 covers part of greater Houston and southeast Texas.

What this office does

A member of the State Board of Education holds one of 15 seats elected from districts across Texas. Working with the commissioner of education, the board develops and updates a long-range plan for public education, establishes curriculum and graduation requirements, adopts rules carrying out the required school curriculum, sets criteria for identifying gifted and talented students, carries out duties under the school accountability system and the Foundation School Program, and may invest the Permanent School Fund.
