What this office does

The agriculture commissioner leads the Texas Department of Agriculture, whose work spans production agriculture, consumer protection, economic development and healthy living. On the consumer side it regulates weights and measures devices such as grocery scales and retail price scanners, regulates pesticide use, and certifies organic products. It protects crops from pests and disease, administers agricultural research grants, and markets Texas products. The department also administers a dozen federal nutrition programs supporting local foods and nutrition education in schools.
