What this office does
The comptroller of public accounts is Texas's chief financial officer, serving as the state's tax collector, accountant, revenue estimator, treasurer, cashier and purchasing manager. The office collects taxes and fees owed to the state, writes the state's checks and keeps its books, and manages Texas's fiscal affairs. Lawmakers rely on it to produce annual financial reports and estimate future state revenues. The comptroller also chairs the Treasury Safekeeping Trust, which invests and oversees state assets.
