What this office does
The governor is Texas's chief executive, elected statewide. The office signs or vetoes bills passed by the Legislature, convenes special sessions for specific purposes, and delivers a report on the condition of the state at the start of each regular session. It recommends a two-year budget, estimates amounts to be raised by taxation, serves as commander-in-chief of the state's military forces, grants reprieves, commutations and pardons on the recommendation of the Board of Pardons and Paroles, declares special elections to fill certain vacancies, and appoints Texans to state offices, boards and commissions.
