What this office does
Houston ISD is governed by a nine-member Board of Managers appointed by the Texas Education Agency rather than by elected trustees. Under the Texas Education Code the commissioner of education may appoint a board of managers over a district, and that board assumes all of the powers and authority previously held by the elected board of trustees — working with the appointed superintendent on academics, operations and governance. HISD's elected trustees remain suspended from governing while the state intervention continues.
The state replaced Houston ISD's elected trustees with an appointed Board of Managers in 2023. Your elected trustees currently hold no power. The state has outlined conditions for returning control to elected leadership.
